Mountain Bikes
As their name implies, mountain bikes are designed for mountain biking, a sport using bicycles for many types of off-road use. Mountain bicycles are sturdily built to withstand off-road use and the have wide tires with large treads to give good grip on uneven surfaces and to help to absorb shocks when riding on rough surfaces.
Mountain bikes use 26 inch wheels and are designed to be very manoeuverable. Some models also have a suspension system on the front and even on the rear wheels. Brakes are often up-rated to disc designs instead of the more usual cantilever or V-brakes.
A mountain bicycle is sometimes referred to as an MTB or an ATB standing for All Terrain Bicycle.
